Job Security
A major concern for employees is the threat that they may lose their job. Job security is the likelihood that an employee will keep his or her job, and not face unemployment either through being made redundant or dismissed. In the past 20 years, employees have faced continuing employment cutbacks, automation, downsizing, increased competition from imports and non-unionised domestic companies. Job security can no longer be taken for granted. It is a significant issue for many Australian workers.
With the downturn in the economy, many industries began laying off workers.

Employees looking for reassurance:
Organisations can improve their productivity and performance simply by providing employees with reassurance about job security. Yet almost 30% of employees say they are not receiving this reassurance. As employees face wage freezes and the on-going effects of the global economic crisis, the latest Leadership, Employment and Direction (L.E.A.D.) Survey has found job security has become a major influence on workplace performance. Job security rocketed from the eleventh to the second most important influence on improving an employee's performance.

Stress, Job Insecurity, Lack Of Control: The Real Story For Commuting Mine-workers
New research has found that commuting mine-workers are facing personal and family stress, extreme job insecurity, fatigue and lack of choice over their working and living arrangements. The Essential Research survey of 1493 workers commissioned by the CFMEU found that more than two thirds (69%) of workers fear they’ll lose their current job. CFMEU Mining and Energy General Vice President Wayne McAndrew said the survey exposed a number of disturbing trends in the resources industry. “The high level of job insecurity reflects the current cost-cutting drive that is seeing companies ruthlessly slash jobs at any suggestion of a compromise on profits,” said Mr McAndrew.
