Over the last 100 years, the work people do has changed a lot. This is evident from the industries in which they work in. People involved in similar types of production work in what is called an industry. The three main industries are primary, secondary and tertiary. There are also some side industries like Quaternary and Quinary industries which are just as important as the main three industries.

Primary Industry:
A Primary Industry is one of the industries that produces raw materials -For example, fresh fruit- from what nature has provided, not man made production like gadgets and car manufacturing. All types of farming, mining, fishing, grazing and forestry are apart of primary industries. Primary industries provide a lot of our food, the work of employees in these industries is vital for everyone. A known fact, approximately 60 per cent of all Australia's exports are primary industry products. |
Secondary Industry:
Secondary Industries include all workers involved in turning raw materials into finished or semi-finished products. Examples of this are iron ore, cole and limestone, which are turned into steel - semi finished product. Steel is then used to manufacture cars and steel framed houses= finished products. Sine examples include car manufacturers, steel works, dress makers and builders.

Tertiary Industry:
People who work in Tertiary Industries provide a service to others. For example, retailers, dentists, bankers and solicitors. Over the past 40 years, the number of employees in tertiary industries has grown so rapidly it has been broken down into the quaternary industry and Quinary industries. Examples include legal services, distribution, customer service and accounting.

Quaternary Industry:
The Quaternary Industry is made up of service industries involved in the transfer and processing of information and knowledge. Telecommunications, property, computing and education are just some examples.

Quinary Industry:
Refers to domestic activities such as those performed by stay-at-home parents or homemakers. These activities are typically not measured by cash amounts but it is important to recognise these activities in contribution to the economy.
